Projects and Events
Ōkorewa Lagoon
Ōkorewa, near Lake Ferry settlement, is part of the internationally important Wairarapa Moana wetland complex. Our vision for the lagoon is a healthy lagoon supporting indigenous flora and fauna, for the education and enjoyment of our community and visitors. Our group, along with many other volunteers and partner agencies, has planted thousands of native shrubs trees and grasses around the lagoon and are monitoring water quality, fish and birdlife. Monitoring results show the lagoon is home to threatened species including banded dotterel, pipit, inanga and longfin eel. The Ōkorewa Lagoon project is supported by the Department of Conservation and Greater Wellington. |
Lake Ferry Gully Planting
The South Wairarapa Biodiversity Group worked with South Wairarapa District Council to plant a retired gully adjacent to the greywater treatment fields above Lake Ferry settlement.
Seedlings were planted for two consecutive years and this area has established brilliantly in a very short time. This will become more visible to the public when the proposed walkway to a lookout overlooking the Lake Onoke mouth is completed.
